Green Fleet Awards

The Green Fleet Awards recognizes peak-performing fleet sustainability efforts and honors fleets who have enhanced practices to make a positive impact on the environment. This annual honor recognizes organizations that execute groundbreaking and inventive programs for their green initiatives.

The Green Fleet Awards is free to enter and is open to both government and commercial fleets in North America. Government fleets consist of all federal, state, and local government fleets, including fleets that are operated by local government personnel or contracted services. The Green Fleet Award is a comprehensive set of criteria specifically tailored around the challenges and requirements of fleet professionals.

Update to Contest Criteria
We’ve been listening! This year’s contest application has been updated and will be slightly different than in the past. Based upon feedback from the prior year’s Green Fleet contestants, the application format has been streamlined to make questions more concise. Plus, everything needs a makeover now and then… We’re hoping it will take less time to complete the application!

Some sections of the application are essentially the same as in the past, particularly about your fleet composition and fuel use found at the beginning of the application. However, the questions in other parts of the application have been either combined or reworded, and it is important that you start the application from the beginning, and fill it out question by question. This is primarily a bench-marking tool, and we hope that the new format will help you and your staff really take a deep look at your operation. And remember, get help from other departments! Don’t put the whole burden on yourself. Other people in the organization may have some great and important answers to some of these questions. The primary criteria remain the same and we’re going to continue to look at:

  • Fleet composition and alternative fuel use
  • Environmental benefits of your actions
  • Long range planning
  • Inter-municipal/inter-organizational cooperation
  • Cooperative activities with trade schools, high schools, colleges, professional organizations, and the Clean Cities coalitions
  • Technology applications
  • What policies or procedures have been implemented (and enforced) to reduce fleet size, vehicle usage and fuel consumption?
  • Green driving programs
  • Green procurement initiatives
  • Facilities improvements
  • Ability to research and plan for new federal and state grant opportunities for green fleet initiatives
