eRoadMAP Electrification Planning Tool

As more fleets transition to electric vehicles, timely access to charging infrastructure and reliable power supply becomes critical. However, aligning fleet electrification with utility planning can be challenging. Utilities often struggle to predict EV charging demand, while fleets may not know how to effectively engage with utilities.

NAFA is working with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)—a leading utility industry research organization—to provide tools that improve collaboration between fleets and utilities as part of the EV2Scale2030 initiative.

You Can Help Shape the Future of Electrification

eRoadMAP™ is a first-of-its-kind interactive tool that:

  • Helps utilities understand where, when, and how much EV charging load is likely to materialize on the U.S. electric grid.
  • Allows users to explore how quickly fleet electrification is expected in different regions and identifies the energy needs at the individual power feeder line level where critical utility planning occurs.
  • Highlights both immediate and future charging needs through a process that aggregates and anonymizes fleet data so that it cannot be traced back to the original data provider.

NAFA members can significantly improve utility and utility regulator planning by contributing their electrification planning information to this highly-secure data environment. EPRI is seeking input from small and medium private and public fleets. This data is critical to utilities for gaining a comprehensive picture of fleet charging needs and the resulting grid needs.

Contribute your data using EPRI’s simplified spreadsheet:
Download the spreadsheet
It is not necessary that all data elements be filled out; any data fleets can provide will be welcomed. Your individualized data will not be made public.

Then, submit your completed file (include your fleet name in the title):
Submit your data

Any amount of information is helpful—even partial data is welcome. NAFA encourages all members to contribute to this vital initiative. By sharing your data, you’re helping shape a more reliable, efficient, and future-ready grid for fleet electrification.

If you have questions about data submissions, please contact Jamie Dunckley at EPRI jdunckley@epri.com. If you have questions about NAFA’s role in the project contact Michael Parr with NAFA’s advocacy program mparr@hillstaffer.com.

EPRI has worked with some of the largest private sector fleet operators to collect data on charging needs (including Amazon, Enterprise, Pitt Ohio, and Republic Services). Your data can play a vital role in helping utilities make informed infrastructure decisions. eRoadMAP is already making an impact—cited in nine state regulatory proceedings aimed at proactive grid investment to support fleet electrification.

Coming Soon: GridFAST™

Because it can be difficult for a fleet to understand how best to communicate with utilities regarding electrification planning, EPRI is also developing a second tool.  GridFAST™ is designed to:

  • Facilitate early fleet-utility conversations
  • Standardize the information-sharing between fleets and electric companies across the U.S.
  • Help fleets identify the utility that services a particular facility
  • Provide fleets with connections with the relevant individuals in the utility for planning coordination

GridFAST will work in concert with eRoadMAP and will be available starting in March 2025.
