A basic tenet of fleet management is to have a policy framework that supports the full range of fleet operations.
This is listed as one of the eleven essentials of fleet management, yet, many fleets have no formally adopted policies and many others have weak or ambiguous statements.
An organization without a strategic plan is like a ship without a compass; it will lack direction and the ability to fulfill its purpose. In a similar vein, the organization lacking a robust policy framework is like a ship without a
competent crew; it may have a known direction, but is lacking the basic ingredients to get where it needs to go.
Many organizations use mileage and/or months-in-service to determine when to cycle their assets. This method, however, doesn’t take into account the great variation in vehicle usage that can occur across a fleet or how the vehicle may have been driven. This is where predictive analytics and leveraging big data can give fleet managers a clearer picture of the condition of their vehicles by using a model that incorporates factors such as maintenance history, driver behavior, age, and mileage.
the sheer number of vehicles and drivers managed by the federal General Services Administration (GSA) is enough to make a fleet manager’s head spin: 50,000 vehicles procured every year, 215,000 vehicles leased, and more than 1 million drivers. How does any one person begin to put their arms around an operation that large? FLEETSolutions went to the one person that knows – NAFA Member Bill Toth Jr., Director of GSA’s Office of Fleet Management – to get his perspective on the special challenges of managing a fleet of such proportions.
Bruce Chesson faces the kinds of challenges all fleet managers deal with. His fleet, on the other hand, is anything but typical. “When I speak to people and say that I am with NASA, everyone kind of raises their head and perks up a bit,” Chesson said. “They look at you a bit differently.” Chesson is Transportation Officer for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida, which has the equivalent size and operational requirements of a small city: 700 facilities span the center’s 144,000 acres.

Unfortunately, these tax credits expired at the end of 2017. We now have a critical window of opportunity to push Congress to extend these credits through 2022.

When it’s said that “fleet management is a science,” that’s not hyperbole. Sam Graves (R-Mo.), Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Highways and Transit. Graves is a proponent of Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT), a funding mechanism that charges drivers according to how many miles the vehicle has traveled, as opposed to current point-of-purchase fuel taxes. His proposal intends to provide financial stability for the Highway Trust Fund (HTF).

Here are some of my more memorable personal recollections from the four days."
Fleet and mobility professionals frequently find themselves in the position of mediator and conflict mitigation manager, with two employees on either side and at odds with each other. How do you, as the fleet subject matter expert, resolve these human resources-related situations, and why is it important that you learn to do so?
Investing in a new technology or initiative for the sustainability benefits alone can be a noble idea with long-term benefits – but not necessarily one that upper management will gravitate toward. These days, with fleet budgets being crunched to squeeze out every last dime, your sustainability efforts might also require cost savings.
Are You Really Ready? The Critical Role of Fleets Before, During, and Post-Disaster, put attendees, figuratively speaking, in positions they might not have wanted to be: knee-deep in flood waters, bracing for hurricane-force winds, and staring down a wall of fire descending from the mountains.

It is imperative that the fleet manager maintains a good relationship with the procurement department and vice-versa. This is a partnership, not a rivalry. After a long and illustrious career in fleet and as a valued NAFA member, Ray Breault announced in early 2018 his decision to step away from his duties with the company Fleet Response. It is the close of a career Breault called in his farewell statement, “a profession I’ve known and loved for 59 years.”

The U.S. House and Senate are currently considering legislation for highly autonomous vehicles (HAVs). An issue being debated is whether fleet managers will have real-time access to vehicle- and engine-generated data. The immediate question is whether Congressional leaders will include data access in the final legislation.
