NAFA Certification Program

Background

NAFA delivers fleet management education through a variety of instructor-led and reference products ranging from beginner- to advanced-level. At the pinnacle of this education system stands the Certified Automotive Fleet Manager (CAFM) program.

NAFA’s certification programs are based on NAFA’s Fleet Management Education Competency Model with practical assessment exercises throughout the curriculum to reinforce fleet management principles and knowledge. Through the Certified Automotive Fleet Management (CAFM) and the Certified Automotive Fleet Specialist (CAFS) certification programs, fleet managers master the core disciplines of fleet management on a broad scale. Candidates learn about fleet management principles and best practices from multiple organizational perspectives, which ultimately results in a well-rounded fleet professional who is prepared for success regardless of what type fleet they will manage throughout their career.

Certified Automotive Fleet Manager (CAFM)

The CAFM certification program offers the most up-to-date fleet management education. Successful completion of the CAFM program requires passing all eight disciplines in NAFA’s Education Competency Model within a three-year period and up to two, one-year extensions. The eight disciplines are:

1. Asset Management (AM)
2. Business Management (BM)
3. Financial Management (FM)
4. Fleet Information Management (FIM)
5. Maintenance Management (MM)
6. Risk Management (RM)
7. Vehicle Fuel Management (VFM)
8. Professional Development (PD)

To enroll in the program, please print and fill out the Certification Program Application Form. When submitting same either by fax or by regular mail, please provide full payment. The exam fees are separate. Please review the exam page for more details.

Certified Automotive Fleet Specialist (CAFS)

The NEW Certified Automotive Fleet Specialist (CAFS) program [formerly known as the Certified Automotive Fleet Supervisor] is open for enrollment. The change in language is intended to align with NAFA's strategy of including all sectors and professions within the fleet industry. As a result of this change, candidates will have the option of selecting one of the following discipline sets to earn the CAFS designation:

1. Discipline Set One: Includes Fleet Information Management, Professional Development, Risk Management, and Financial Management.

2. Discipline Set Two: Includes Asset Management, Fleet Information Management, Business Management, and Risk Management.

3. Discipline Set Three: Includes Fleet Information Management, Maintenance Management, Professional Development, and Vehicle Fuel Management.

The program is open to any individual with at least one year experience in any fleet-related position, as well as those enrolled in a college or university program in a fleet-related discipline. Successful completion of any of the above CAFS discipline sets will earn the candidate the designation of Certified Automotive Fleet Specialist (CAFS). Successful completion of all eight disciplines will earn the candidate the Certified Automotive Fleet Manager (CAFM) designation.

If you are currently enrolled in the CAFS program you may continue on your original path or select one of the new sets if it is better suited to your learning needs. Current candidates need only contact NAFA staff to elect a set, or to change your present set.

Those who successfully complete the original discipline set three (which is comprised of fleet information management, maintenance management, professional development, and vehicle fuel management) will be able to apply for college credits from Ferris State University (FSU) as part of NAFA’s strategic partnership with FSU. The CAFS designation in set three is eligible for 6 college credits and the CAFM designation is eligible for 12 college credits from FSU. The new disciplines sets will be submitted to FSU for review and approval for college credits in the future.

The CAFS program and the flexible sets allow candidates to customize their learning in accordance with their needs while maintaining the CAFM designation as the industry standard in Fleet Management certification.

Please click here to review the program outline, fees and requirements. Once enrolled in this self-study program, participants review the modules until ready to test. Upon completing the set's four objective examinations, participants earn the CAFS designation.
